International Summer School

The intensive program entitled ”Selected issues of safety engineering and exploitation of nuclear power plants in the context of EU energy policy” (01-12.09.2011) was prepared by Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland) in cooperation with VŠB-Technical University Ostrava (Czech Republic) and Technical University of Bratislava (Slovak Republic).
The main aims of the intensive program were: an integration of a European academic centers in order to discuss current problems of nuclear power engineering sector, exchanging experiences from the fields of new power engineering technologies and safety engineering issues connected with exploitation of modern nuclear power plants as well as enhancing the qualifications of graduates. The timetable of the project consisted of ten-days cycle of teaching activities including lectures, laboratories, projects and workshops for a group of 30 students from the partner universities. Subject matter of projects focused on selected issues concerning thermal-balance calculations of PWR (pressurized water reactor) nuclear power plants. Laboratory tasks based on simulators of various types of nuclear reactors. During the project organizers also arranged two workshops which took place in Jaslovskie-Bohunice and Mochovce nuclear power plants. Additional goal of the project was including to cooperation representatives of enterprises from a nuclear power engineering sector like AREVA or EDF. The invited lectures were devoted to exchange of personal experiences of speakers from a field of design and exploitation of nuclear reactors.
The leading subject matter of the project was devoted to exploitation of modern nuclear power plants with a particular emphasis on the problem of safety engineering and procedures. Development of alternative sources of energy is connected with the necessity of reduction of CO2 emission – one of the current priorities of the EU Energy Policy. The intensive program contributes to the exchange of academic staff experiences from the field of widely understood nuclear power engineering sector both with the safety engineering aspects among countries of the Central European region (Poland, Czech Republic and Slovak Republic).
